Is satin a real silk?

I am currently in the market for a new sheet set and I am a bit confused about the term "satin". I have heard that satin sheets are typically made of silk, but I have also seen some satin sheets that are made of synthetic materials. As someone who values the material quality of my bedding, I want to make sure I am getting the real thing. So my question is: Is satin a real silk or can it be made from other materials?
